BACKSLIDING

Backsliding is a relapse or decline into bad habits and sinful behavior. It is wandering away from the truth and being stuck in sin. It is to fall away from God temporarily or permanently and returning to the world. It is growing cold and leaving the first love and losing interest in the things of God. A believer that is backsliding often loses enthusiasm to study the word of God, to attend prayer meetings, and also in church attendance, in worshipping and praising the Lord, in fellowshipping with others; he or she experiences a declining prayer life and interest in witnessing.

It is a form of retrogression, going back to the old sinful ways after one has confessed Jesus Christ. When one is no more as hot as when one first believed.

It is instructive to know that backsliding is ever threatening every believer! Note that "wherefore let him that thinketh that he stands take heed lest he falls " 1Cor 10 :12.  Brethren, you are admonished " to be vigilant, alert and cautious for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion seeking someone to seize upon and devour " 1Peter 5:8. Recall Simon Peter's experience of backsliding!

EVIDENCE OR SIGNS OF BACKSLIDING:
  • When one grows cold towards the things of God and commitment is regresses
  • When one's attendance in the church drops
  • When one is no more in faith and one starts to doubt and reject the word of God.
  • When one begins to take one's relationship with God with levity.
  • When one puts on an old self which was renounced before.
  • When one starts to lack spiritual fruit.
  • When one no longer has a burden for the lost souls.
  • When one becomes more comfortable with sin.
  • When one no longer worships in spirit and truth.
  • When one is going backward spiritually and morally.
  • When one feels comfortable walking with the ungodly, standing with sinners and sitting in the seat of the scornful.
  • When one walks away or abandons one's ministry.
  • When one is no more fervent in prayer.

CAUSES OF BACKSLIDING:
  • Love of the world.
  • Self-righteousness
  • Pride.
  • Evil association.
  • Disappointment and failure.
  • Disobedience.

EFFECTS OF BACKSLIDING:
  • Separation from God and inability to approach God (Gen 3:8)
  • Spiritual poverty (Amos 8:11)
  • One's heart will be filled with one own's ways (Prov 14:14)
  • Loss of salvation (Isa 1:28).

However, there is always a way out for a backslider. Our God is merciful and compassionate.
He wants backsliders to return to him and come back to their first love. The Lord said to the children of Israel Jer 3:22, "Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings."
The Lord likened them to a wife who treacherously departeth from her husband. He is ready to have those who wander away from him. Hosea14:4, "I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him."

WAY OUT:
Make a confession (Lk 15:21)
Come back to God through repentance (Ps 51:11).
Renounce your sin and return to God (1 John 1:9)
Pray to God always and ask for forgiveness (1 Thess 5:17).
Draw near to God and have moment to moment relationship with God (James 4:8).
Worship constantly in spirit and in truth (Jhn 4:24).
Glorify God with your entire being (Cor 6:20).
Study the word (2 Tim 2:15).
Abstain from every form of evil (2 Tim 2:22).
Ask for the leading of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:25).

Brethren, whatever sin that lures you or moves you away from God must be dealt with and brought before God in repentance.

Learn from the past mistakes you made that led to backsliding and determine to not repeat those mistakes. The merciful and compassionate God will gladly have you back as the proverbial prodigal son.

ROLE OF OTHER BELIEVERS:
The Bible says in Gal 6:1, "Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted."

Others should assist a backslider at all cost to the path of righteousness. Pray for him daily and approach him with love and humility. Encourage him with the word and do not castigate or judge him.

PRAYER:
Dear Father in heaven, I know that the life of a backslider is a life of sorrow having moved away from you. Let me be far away from whatever will make me backslide. Help me and grant me the grace to remain and abide in you till the end. I will never be a victim of backsliding in Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

COMMITMENT

Text: Matt 22:37, 28:19-20, 1 Cor 9:16.

Commitment is an attitude of diligent service and sacrifice; it means to be fully dedicated to a cause, and to demonstrate absolute loyalty to it. It is likened to a pledge and is like vowing to be the best and do the best. Is putting on the best and forging ahead.

There are so many areas or things one can be committed to. It is possible to be committed to ungodly things which are likely to be destructive and unprofitable. It thus means that one can be negatively committed. On the other hand one can be committed to godly things and such will be constructive and beneficial. That is being positively committed.

This sermon will  concentrate on  commitments  that are worthy, that will lead to spiritual growth and godly living. First and foremost is to be committed to God. Commitment to God must supersede all other commitments. A few others are commitments to i) The Word, ii) Prayer,  iii) Doing good, and to iv ) The Great commission.

A Christian will be recognised by how he or she lives and how committed he or she is to God, his commandments and to his work. Your attitude towards studying the word, prayer, service to God, how you worship him and how happy you are to be in His presence and fellowship with him determines who you are and how committed you are.

Who ever professes Christ must have total commitment to him. Matt 22:37-38, "Jesus said unto him, "Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment."  Commitment to God must be total and must supersede all other things.

Commitment to The Lord.
The Lord has shown us by example of what commitment is. God, Himself is so committed to his promises, and that is why Isa 55:10-11 say, "For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returns not thither,  but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."  He is so concerned about our safety and committed to protecting us from dangers when he said  "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass  through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze."Isa 43:2.

Brethren, no commitment can be greater than this. Therefore your own commitment must be total.  When Jesus said, "I am the bread which came down from heaven." The Jews murmured and many deserted him.  Peter showed high level of commitment when Jesus asked his twelve disciples whether they too would also like to go away as others went away but, "Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life."Jn 6: 68.  Peter again said unto Jesus, "Behold, we have forsaken all and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?" Matt 19:27. Peter knew there is no alternative. No other one to follow except Jesus. Of course we have eternal life through him. He is the gate-way to heaven.

Paul demonstrated his love, dependability and commitment to God when he said, "For I am persuaded,  that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present,  nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."  That is, no matter what happens, nothing will move him away from God. The three Hebrew men held on to God even in the face of death when King Nebuchadnezzar asked them to worship the golden image he set up and that who ever did not worship the golden image would be thrown into the burning furnace. They answered the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar,  we do not need to answer you on this point.  If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire, and He will rescue us from your hand, O  king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king,  that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up!" These men were so committed to their God and held on to their belief and trust in him. Daniel 3:16-18.

Commitment to The Word.
God demonstrated to us the authority and power in His Word. He created the world with the word.  Gen 1:1-26. The whole world was framed by the word of God. Jesus Christ healed the Centurion's servant neither by touching him nor visiting him but by sending his word. Matt 8:13.
"For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven." Ps 119:89. "For thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." Ps 138:2b. That is, God honours his word above all things. "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the diving asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow and is a discerned of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Heb 4:12. The Lord says that his word is going to accomplish all that he purposes.'Isa 55:11. Whatever God said became a reality. The word of God has stood the test of time and believers put their trust and confidence in the Word. Because of the trust in the word and because the word gives us understanding of who God is and He speaks through the word.  Therefore you are to be committed to it. The word of God has authority and is always backed up with power and  you can speak His word to any situation. The word can move mountains when you speak it with faith. God has given us power to speak and to create by his word. The Bereans were said to be more noble than those in Thessalonica because they were committed to studying the word. They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily and believed. Acts 17:11-12. You are admonished to be committed to the word. You can use the word to pull down any stronghold, to move mountains and also through it you are empowered. His word never goes void.

Commitment  to Prayer.
Prayer is communication with God through Jesus Christ. The Bible admonishes us to pray without ceasing. When you spend quality time with God you don't leave his presence the same way,  for you will be transformed. Live a life of prayer and be committed to it.  Do not wait until you have problems before you start to pray. Prayer changes things and situations as it can shape the outcomes of things that are out of control when you call upon God to intervene on your behalf. King David recognised this when he said, "The moment I pray the tide of battle turns; my enemies flee." Ps. 56: 9. The Angel of the Lord also told Daniel that immediately he prayed the Lord sent a word. Daniel 9:23.

Prayer is a relationship and a two way communication. God speaks when you pray, so learn to pray about everything. In his presence there is fullness of joy and prayer can give you joy. Hannah was committed to prayer that through it she got more than what she requested for. The Bible says she continued praying before the LORD, asking for a child, and God gave her Samuel and later added five more children.1Sam1:27.  Hezekiah turned to God in prayer when he was sick unto death,God heard his prayer and sent Isaiah to him to confirm that his prayer has been answered.  God healed him and added fifteen years unto his days. Isa38:5.  Jabez whose mother named him son of sorrow went to God in prayer and presented his case. God heard his request, granted him that which he requested and even made him more honourable than his brethren.1Chron4:9.

Brethren,  prayer is a powerful tool the Lord has given unto you.  The three people  mentioned above did not leave God the same way after their prayer.  Be committed to prayer and learn to take everything to God in prayer.

Commitment to Doing Good.
The Bible says "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." Gal 6:9. "But ye, brethren, be not be weary in well doing." 2 Thess 3:13.
As soon as Jesus was anointed with the Holy Ghost and with power, he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Jesus empowered his disciples to go about healing the sick, casting out demons and preaching the kingdom of God. You are admonished to go about doing good and that you should not give up because in due season you shall reap the reward of doing good. Find joy in serving others and in doing good. Dorcas was full of good works and alms-deeds, making coats and garments for the widows. When she died, the widows gathered and wept, and they washed her and laid her in an upper chamber. They sent for Peter to come and see Dorcas where she was laid; Peter raised her from death and brought her back to life perhaps to do more of good works. Acts 9:36-41.

The parable of the Good Samaritan as narrated by Jesus Christ indicated that out of the Priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan who saw the man that was wounded and stripped naked and left half dead, it was only the Samaritan who had compassion on him. He took care of the wounded man, took him to an inn to be looked after and paid for his care.  No wonder he earned the name The Good Samaritan for he had mercy and compassion on the wounded man. Lk 10:30-37. Brethren, be committed to doing good. In actual fact, "We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand  that we should walk in them; Eph 2: 10." Be a beacon in the community; be involved in the acts of charity, kindness and goodwill. Rev 22:12 says, "Behold I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be."

Commitment to The Great Commission .
The Great Commission is to make disciples of all nations. It is to preach the gospel and spread the good news in all the world. Jesus commissioned his disciples to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. And to teach them to obey everything he had commanded them.  And he promised to be with them till the end of the world. The commission is a mandate for all Christians.  Whoever claims to be in Christ must be committed to this Commission. Matt 28:19-:20. The more committed you are to the Commission the more committed you will be to Jesus Christ and it is also an act of obedience to him.

Apostle Paul was very committed to this Commission.  He made many missionary journeys through Rome and Asia Minor making disciples and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was in chains and bonds and he endured hardship for the sake of Christ and he also had to discipline his body for the sake of the gospel so that many could be discipled. He was so committed that he said in 1Cor 9:16, "For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast about, for I am compelled. Woe to me if I do not preach the good news of salvation."  Paul, a preacher and an apostle was very committed to the Great Commission. No wonder he said towards the end of his life, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:" 2 Tim 4:7.  He had completed the course set before him; and ready to go home and meet Christ in heaven. He was very joyous for completing the mission of spreading the good news and ready to receive the crown of righteousness laid up for him. His name is indelible as he authored many books in the Bible writing letters to encourage believers even when in chains. Brethren, you are admonished to be committed to the Great Commission.  It is a command from our Lord Jesus Christ. Also, as we are awaiting his second coming, let us be committed, and a crown of righteousness awaits you.

In conclusion, to live a successful Christian life, you are admonished to be committed to the listed above.

Prayer.
Father in heaven, I want to live a successful Christian life and finish well. I want to qualify for the crown of righteousness promised those who await the second coming of Christ and other crowns. Grant me the grace to be committed totally to you, to your word, to prayer, to doing good works and to the Great Commission. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

BEARING FRUITS IN OLD AGE

Text: Psalm 92:12-14.

To bear is to bring forth, or to produce. It is to bring people to Christ. Old age is assumed to begin above sixty five years. The Bible often uses the fruits we bear to describe the product of our lives. The fruits here are souls that we impact positively and assist spiritually to remain and abide in Christ. To bear fruits is to labour for the harvest of lost souls and to make sure these souls remain and abide in Christ. It is doing the work in the service of God as stipulated in the Bible and living to save and bless men. It is by loving, caring, doing good, serving others with love, being full of good works and being a very good role model to others especially the younger ones to emulate.

God's desire is to transform us into the image of Christ in character and in good works and to make us fruitful even till our old age. "They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;" Ps 92:14.
The aged men are expected to be sober, brave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity and in patience. The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things. They are to teach the younger women sound doctrines and encourage them to be in faith and remain in faith and teach them to be morally good. In other words, there are roles to play in old age. Old age is a blessing from God and the golden years must be spent profitably and wisely making the best out of it. We are encouraged because God promised to sustain us at old age. "Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you."Isa 46:4b.  Old age does not mean one should become gloomy but be involved in the kingdom work and be relevant. You don't retire from serving the LORD.  It is not like the secular job or work where you retire at the age stipulated by the employer.  As long as God enables you, keep growing in Christ and keep serving. Each day we live is an opportunity to do more of his service.  No wonder the psalmist says in Ps 71:18, "Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come."

To be able to bear fruits in old age one has to abide in Christ and cling onto him permanently. Jesus said in Jn 15:4-5, "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." So the first condition  is to abide in Christ and cling to him as this will make you stay intimately connected to the true vine and derive all that you need to be productive and fruitful.

Desire to bear fruits and work towards it. Meditate on the word of God regularly and be knowledgeable and keep increasing in the knowledge of God. Be ready to labour for the harvest of souls.  Be steadfast in godliness. Be filled with the Holy Spirit  and walk in the spirit, the more filled you are  the more evident of the fruit in you. Be committed  to prayer as this will transform you and enable you to communicate with God and receive from him. Shun the lusts of the flesh so that you will not be discouraged and you won't grow weary.

Old age is associated with wisdom. Use your godly wisdom to affect lives positively. To be fruitful in old age does not just happen overnight. It is a process that starts from youth. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment of many years in his service to get to the level of being fruitful at old age. It is like planting a seed  and nourishing it to grow, it matures and flourishes and then produces fruits. Therefore, one needs to be committed, be steadfast, be dogged and be ready to persevere.

Be determined to spend your golden years for being productive and fruitful. Living for Christ and being attached to him. But if by any means you have not being involved, it is not too late. Desire it and get involved and through Christ who strengthens, you will be able to. It will be a good choice to make.

In the Bible, Moses and Aaron received God's command at ages eighty and eighty three years respectively to appear before Pharaoh to demand the freedom of the Israelites. Ex 7:7.
At the age of eighty four years Anna, a prophetess and widow who never departed from the temple, served God with fasting and prayers night and day. She was always giving thanks unto the Lord, and spoke of him (Jesus)  to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. Lk 2:36-38. You too can be relevant and useful at old age. There is no age barrier in serving the Lord and bearing fruits.

In this age of technology you can use different media to get in touch with people especially with a cell phone by sharing  the word with them, spreading the good news, encouraging  and lifting them up  with prayers and admonishing them. Also by giving, by sharing and by spending time and associating with souls are good ways of bearing fruits. On your part, be worthy of emulation, be of good character and be a good ambassador of Christ.
When those you are affecting positively are growing in the  Lord and are abiding in Christ, you will be joyful, you fill fulfilled and fruitful. Then eternally the crown promised those who bear fruits for the kingdom will be reserved for you. The aged are being admonished to spend their golden years gracefully and bear fruits for the kingdom.

Prayer.
Father, it is your desire to satisfy me with long life and also to bear fruits in old age. Grant me the grace to live long till ripe old age and to bear much fruits for the kingdom in Jesus' name I pray. Amen

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Text: Psalm 128:1-4. Proverbs 1:7, 14:26-27.

To fear God is to recognise His awesomeness, greatness, authority, power, might, strength, resourcefulness, against our littleness, lowliness, frailty, powerlessness and therefore adore, revere, hold Him in very great esteem, in respect, awe, admiration, love, submission and obedience. It is not the kind of fear we express to our superiors because they could torment and make life difficult for us. The fear of the LORD is a reverential fear with love for God, coupled with trust, confidence, and hope in Him. It is to hate evil, pride, arrogance, and evil way; and when we choose to hate evil we align ourselves to God and rightly ascribe to Him all authority and power. It is a fountain of life and it helps us to depart from the snares of death.

The fear is not being afraid of Him but doing that which will bring pleasure to Him. It is to please Him always and dread of displeasing Him in any way or any form. It is to honour, to worship, and to love Him. It is a reverential fear that is expressed in obedience to His commands.

The Bible says the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. To fear God is a treasure therefore you are admonished not to miss the treasure. When you fear God in obedience, it leads you to true and genuine wisdom and understanding. A true Christian must be God fearing. It is being in a right state of heart toward God to reverentially obey and trust in Him. To fear God is obedience as demonstrated by Abraham in Gen 22:12 and when we fear Him we align ourselves with Him.

Let us examine some of the Bible statements on the fear of the LORD.
  • Job 28:28, "And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding."
  • Ps 2:11, "Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling."
  • Ps 31:19a, "Oh, how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee;"
  • Ps 112:1, "Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in His commandments."
  • Prov 1:7, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge."
  • Prov 15:16, "Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble there with."
  • Prov 22:4, "By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.
  • Isa 8:13, "Sanctify the LORD of hosts Himself; and let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread."
  • Isa 33:6b, "The fear of the LORD is His treasure."
  • Lk 1:50, "And His mercy is on them that fear Him from generation to generation."

The fear of the LORD is well defined in the scriptures. Also, the scriptures establish that it is expedient for a Christian to fear the LORD (1 Peter 2:17).

When you fear the LORD, you derive many blessings as listed below:
  • He will establish your family and household for you. Ex 1:21.
  • He will teach you in the way that you shall choose. Ps 25:12.
  • His secret will be with you and He will show you His covenant. Ps 25:14.
  • His eyes will be upon you. Ps 33:18.
  • You shall not be in want. Ps 34:9
  • He will have pity on you. Ps 103:13.
  • His mercy will be upon you. Ps 103:17.
  • He will make sure you are blessed. Ps 128:1.
  • He will fulfil your desire, hear your cry and save you. Ps 145:19.
  • He will take pleasure in you. Ps 147:11.
  • Your days will be prolonged. Prov 10:27.
  • You shall not be visited with evil. Prov 19:23.
  • You become His treasured possession. Mal 3:17.

Brethren, there are so many benefits you will derive when you fear GOD. Let it be your way of life. The fear of the LORD is one of the surest signs of true godliness acceptable to Him.  Also, parents are admonished to bring up their children in the fear of the LORD in order that they will be able to stand and walk in the joy of the LORD. It is in His fear that you develop strong confidence. Brethren, it is for your own good to fear GOD.

Finally, you are reminded that, "The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death." Pro 14:27.

Prayer: O LORD, unite my heart for reverential fear of your name and help me to have a proper reverential fear of you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
